Watkins Glen State Park Wedding Photos: A Romantic Waterfall Session | Elena and Joseph

Imagine putting your wedding clothes back on, hiking into one of the most incredible gorges in Upstate New York, and spending the evening wandering beneath waterfalls with your brand-new husband. Shoes soaked. Hair damp. Dress trailing along the stone pathways. Not a wedding timeline—or honestly, a care in the world—in sight. 😭🙌🏼 THAT was Elena and Joseph’s wedding attire session at Watkins Glen State Park.

And here's the fun little plot twist: these two were already married! Elena and Joseph officially tied the knot one month before our session with a small, low-key wedding ceremony. They had a friend photograph their actual wedding day for free, but afterward, they knew they wanted to splurge on professional wedding portraits somewhere that felt completely and utterly them.

Elena said it best when she first reached out: “I just want to capture photos in a beautiful place after our small wedding ceremony.” Ummmm...SAY LESS. 🥹

Because when two people who love hiking, traveling, and adventuring tell me they want to put their wedding clothes back on and take photos somewhere beautiful, you better believe we're finding them a WATERFALL!!!!

And while this wasn't technically a Watkins Glen State Park wedding, their session is pretty much a dream come true for anyone wondering what wedding portraits among the waterfalls would look like. Their Watkins Glen State Park wedding photos gave them the adventurous experience they wanted without trying to squeeze it into the timeline of their actual wedding day.

One Month Married & Back in Their Wedding Attire

Before we dive into Watkins Glen and the absolute MAGIC that is Rainbow Falls, I’ve got to give a little bit background on these two. Elena and Joseph are high school sweethearts who met back in 2016, and adventure has pretty much always been woven into their story. They love hiking, traveling, and experiencing new places together—which makes the fact that Joseph proposed at Acadia National Park feel incredibly fitting. Acadia?! Engagement?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! 😭 #BucketList

When it came time to choose a location for their wedding attire session, an adventurous waterfall setting just made sense. Honestly, if you've been dreaming about a Watkins Glen State Park wedding photos, Elena and Joseph's session is the perfect example of how romantic wedding attire can look against this wild, earthy landscape. 🥹

From the second we met, these two were SO easy to be around. They were relaxed, laidback, conversation came effortlessly—basically, they felt like instant friends. There was no worrying about whether Elena's dress was getting a little wet or whether Joseph's shoes were surviving the gorge. 😂 They were simply present, and soaking up every second together.

And considering they had only been married for a MONTH?! The honeymoon, young-and-in-love, can't-stop-touching-each-other energy was alive and well. 🥹🤍

Wedding Attire Made for a Watkins Glen Adventure

Can we also have a moment for THE OUTFITS?! Elena wore the dreamiest strapless lace appliquéd mermaid gown, with delicate floral detailing that looked absolutely unreal against all of the rugged stone and greenery throughout Watkins Glen. I will foreverrrr love the contrast of a polished wedding gown against an untamed landscape. There’s just something about it!!! 🙌🏼

Joseph paired her gown with a classic navy suit, and together, they looked perfectly dressed up without feeling out of place in the slightest. And then there were the cowboy boots. An honorable mention is absolutely necessary. 😝

Between Elena’s gorgeous emerald-cut engagement ring, the lace details of her dress, Joseph carrying her train through the gorge, and all the tiny droplets of water collecting on their clothes and skin, there were SO many little storytelling details tucked into this session. But before we could photograph any of that, we had to actually GET to the waterfalls!

Chasing Rainbow Falls for Their Watkins Glen State Park Wedding Photos

We started at the main Gorge Trail entrance with our sights set on Rainbow Falls. Normally, the Gorge Trail takes you straight through Watkins Glen’s famous rock-lined pathways, but there was construction along the first portion of the trail during our session. Sooooo instead of simply making our way easily through the gorge, we had to hike UP the Rim Trail...only to hike all the way back DOWN into the gorge to reach Rainbow Falls. Casual. 😂 But the second we made our way down there, it was SO worth it.

Watkins Glen is one of those places that somehow feels even more unreal when you're standing inside of it. The gorge walls tower around you while narrow stone pathways wind between waterfalls, moss-covered rock, and layers upon layers of greenery. Everything is damp. Everything glistens. Water seems to drip from practically every surface.

And then you get to Rainbow Falls. Literally...PINCH ME. The stone pathway leads directly behind the waterfall, with water spilling overhead and mist settling over everything around you. The rock walls are covered in moss, the gorge is practically glowing green, and every direction you turn gives you another ridiculous view.

It's exactly why I love photographing couples here—and why a Watkins Glen State Park wedding or post-wedding portrait session can be such an incredible choice for couples who want their photos to feel adventurous, romantic, and completely immersed in nature.

I actually photographed Brooke and Joe's engagement photos at Rainbow Falls earlier this year, and somehow, this place STILL leaves me speechless every single time I go back.

Hi, I’m Emilee!

Soaked Shoes, Misty Hair, & Mile Point Bridge

From Rainbow Falls, we continued up the gorge trail and mounted the stairs toward Mile Point Bridge, which sits directly above the Falls. And OH. MY. GREENERY. Everything had this literal SHEEN of water over it. 🙌🏼

The leaves looked impossibly saturated, moss covered the stone walls, tiny droplets clung to practically every surface, and water continuously trickled down the sides of the gorge. Elena's hair was getting damp. Their clothes were starting to cling. Our shoes were absolutely SOAKED. And at a certain point, it genuinely felt like we had been walking through a tiny monsoon. 😂

And you know what? It made the photos even better! Elena and Joseph didn't fight it for one second. They leaned into the experience completely, which meant I could focus on photographing them exactly as they were—newly married, completely obsessed with each other, and wandering through one of the prettiest places in Upstate New York.

We played around, yes, but I especially leaned into the romantic and intimate side of their relationship. My prompts sounded a little something like, “Kiss all over her shoulder, her temple, her forehead...YASSSSS,” followed shortly by, “Hands all over, pull yourselves super super close, can't get enough of each other!!!!” 😂🤍 Very technical photography terminology over here. But LOOK AT THEM!!! It worked. 😭

Central Cascade, Rock Tunnels, & the Quiet Corners of the Gorge

Eventually, we continued making our way back down the Gorge Trail toward Central Cascade. This part of Watkins Glen has a slightly different feel from Rainbow Falls. Central Cascade features a beautiful semicircular stone overlook facing toward the tallest waterfall in the gorge, giving us an opportunity to step farther back and really grasp the scale of the landscape around Elena and Joseph. And Y'ALL KNOWWWW how I feel about that. 🙌🏼

On our way, we also passed through the most unsuspecting little Rock Tunnel with a low stone retaining wall overlooking the gorge. It was quiet. Calm. Intimate. And soooo scenic.

Honestly, that's one of my favorite things about photographing at Watkins Glen. Rainbow Falls may be the location everyone recognizes, but there are beautiful little pockets tucked throughout the entire Gorge Trail. Sometimes it's a giant waterfall. Other times it's a tiny stone tunnel, a wet pathway, a patch of moss, or a little opening overlooking the water.

You don't have to photograph only the "big" landmarks to make the location feel spectacular.

Psst… in case you haven’t noticed, awkward photos aren’t really my vibe.

My goal is to get you feeling comfortable and yourself, so you can enjoy personality-driven imagery for years to come!

If you’re looking at this gallery, thinking, “YASSSSS!”, then we need to talk… like yesterday!

Best Places for Wedding Photos at Watkins Glen State Park

If you're considering a Watkins Glen State Park wedding or dreaming about coming here for wedding portraits afterward, Rainbow Falls is absolutely worth having on your list—but it is FAR from your only option!

  • Rainbow Falls is obviously iconic. Between the waterfall itself, the pathway that takes you behind it, and the moss-covered gorge walls surrounding you, this is where I'd recommend for those dramatic, unmistakably-Watkins-Glen portraits.

  • Mile Point Bridge is just up the stairs behind Rainbow Falls and gives you a completely different perspective. The greenery surrounding this area is absolutely ridiculous, especially when everything is damp and saturated after rainfall.

  • Central Cascade gives us those wider views I love so much. The semicircular stone overlook and waterfall in the distance make it an incredible spot for photos that show you as tiny little humans surrounded by a HUGE landscape. 🙌🏼

  • There are also locations like Cavern Cascade, Couch's Staircase, and Point Lookout, each offering a different combination of waterfalls, stone architecture, tunnels, overlooks, and gorge views.

The important thing to remember is that Watkins Glen is a natural, publicly accessible environment! Trail accessibility, construction, crowds, seasonal closures, weather, and water levels can all change what is available on a particular day. Elena and Joseph's little Rim Trail detour was the perfect example. 😂 Sometimes we simply have to embrace the adventure!

Tips for Taking Wedding Photos at Watkins Glen State Park

If taking Watkins Glen State Park wedding photos or having a wedding attire session is officially making its way onto your Pinterest board after seeing these photos (sorry not sorry 😝), there are a few things you'll want to know before putting on your wedding attire and heading into the gorge.

First and foremost, choose your timing intentionally! Watkins Glen State Park is popular for a reason, and the Gorge Trail can get extremely busy. Planning your portraits during a quieter time of day gives us much more freedom to move, explore, and photograph those iconic locations without constantly waiting for people to pass.

Second, you do not necessarily need to hike the entire gorge in your wedding gown. Bring comfortable shoes. Carry the dress when needed. And a special consideration—a little pop-up changing tent can be genius if we're planning to hike farther before getting into your wedding attire. In that scenario, you get the adventure without having to climb every staircase in a fitted wedding gown. Win-win. 🙌🏼

And perhaps most importantly... Prepare to get wet. 😂

This is a gorge filled with waterfalls, mist, dripping rock walls, and wet stone pathways. Your shoes might get soaked. Your hair might get damp. The bottom of your dress might collect a little dirt. Personally? I LOVE IT.

Those are often the details that make your photographs feel like an actual story rather than a perfectly polished photoshoot. And when it comes to hair and makeup, you have options! You can absolutely schedule touch-ups before or after your session if keeping everything polished is important to you. Or... if not, embrace the all nat-ur-uhl, baby!!! 😂🙌🏼

You Don't Have to Take All Your Wedding Photos on Your Wedding Day

And THIS is probably my favorite takeaway from Elena and Joseph's entire session—you can create the Watkins Glen State Park wedding photos you've been dreaming about without necessarily having your actual wedding there. Your wedding portraits do not have to happen exclusively on your wedding day.

Elena and Joseph had already gotten married. Their ceremony was small and low-key, and instead of trying to turn it into something it wasn't, they celebrated exactly how they wanted to—and then invested in the adventurous wedding portraits they had been dreaming about afterward. Honestly?! GENIUS.

A wedding attire session gives you so much freedom. There isn't a reception full of people waiting for you. There aren't hungry guests wondering where you disappeared to. There isn't a timeline telling us we have exactly 17.5 minutes before we need to move onto the next thing. 😂

We can choose the location based purely on what you love. We can chase the best light. We can hike. We can get the dress wet. We can spend more time creating without sacrificing a single moment with your people on the actual wedding day. You could do your session the morning after your wedding, during your honeymoon, or a month later like Elena and Joseph—whenever it makes sense for you!

And PSSST... my husband, Jon and I did a wedding attire session, too, at a very similar waterfall!!! So I'm not just encouraging chaos over here—I have personally participated and LOVED it. 😂🤍

For another little dose of waterfall wedding inspiration, Laura and Mark's Taughannock Falls wedding photos are also proof that there is just something MAGICAL about wedding clothes + waterfalls that gets me every. single. time.

Dreaming of Your Own Watkins Glen State Park Wedding Photos?

Whether you're actually planning a Watkins Glen State Park wedding, considering an intimate elopement in the Finger Lakes, or simply want an excuse to put your wedding clothes back on and run around beneath waterfalls together, I am HERE FOR IT. 🙌🏼

Your wedding photos don't have to fit neatly inside the boundaries of your wedding day. They can happen the next morning, a month later, on your anniversary, at the waterfall you've always wanted to visit, or somewhere completely different that feels like you. Elena and Joseph's session was the perfect reminder that sometimes the best thing you can do is forget what wedding photos are "supposed" to look like and create an experience you're genuinely excited about instead.

So cheers to Elena and Joseph—to high school sweethearts turned newlyweds; Acadia proposals and waterfall anniversaries; soaked shoes, damp hair, cowboy boots, and wedding dresses in the gorge; and a marriage that's already beginning with one heck of an adventure. 🥂🤍
