Playful summer engagement photos in Downtown Utica, NY might just be my newest obsession, and after scrolling through my evening wandering around downtown with Haley and Noah, I think you'll understand why. 🥹👏🏼 Between grand marble train stations, historic architecture, vintage locomotives, charming brick-lined streets, and one of the prettiest old-school theater marquees I've photographed, Utica absolutely understood the assignment. 🫡 But before we talk about any of that, let’s start with Noah and Haley.
Way back in the spring of 2019, Haley and Noah weren't exactly planning to meet the love of their lives. They were just two kids studying at Utica University who happened to have class schedules that lined up just right—in the sandwich line in the cafeteria. Day after day, they found themselves waiting in said sandwich line during the same class breaks, and one conversation turned into another... and another... until eventually Noah asked Haley if she'd like to grab dinner together. (Also at the cafeteria… College romance at its finest. 😂)
To Haley's credit, she was no fool and had her best friend strategically sit just a few tables away during their first dinner together... you know... just in case Noah turned out to be a serial killer. And thankfully, he did not. Instead, seven years later (yes, I said, SEVEN. YEARS. LATER. 😂) they finally found themselves in front of my camera celebrating their engagement! (Which, as it turns out, has its own equally funny backstory involving Haley’s younger sister beating her to a proposal. 😂)
The easiest couple to spend an evening with
When their proposal day finally happened, though, it was more than worth the wait. And thankfully, it meant we got to spend a ridiculously fun summer evening exploring one of Upstate New York's most underrated downtowns together. If you're planning a visit, I'd definitely recommend checking out everything the city has to offer through City of Utica's visitor guide because there's far more charm packed into downtown than most people realize.
One of my favorite parts of Haley and Noah's engagement session was honestly just hanging out with them. Some couples need a few minutes to warm up in front of the camera. But these two basically showed up already laughing. Conversation came effortlessly, and we joked the entire evening. 😌
Somewhere in between the walking, slow dancing, spinning, and flirting, we managed to create an atmosphere that felt fun and enjoyable. Those are my favorite kinds of engagement sessions because nothing feels forced, and nothing feels overly posed. Just two people genuinely enjoying being together, which brings us to one of the coolest locations I've ever photographed—Utica Union Station.
Exploring the timeless beauty of Utica Union Station
If you've never stepped inside Utica Union Station, prepare yourself. Because wow. Walking through those massive doors feels less like entering a train station and more like wandering into an European railway terminal that’s frozen in time.
Towering marble columns stretch toward impossibly high coffered ceilings. Giant paned skylights flood the entire concourse with soft natural light. Elegant globe chandeliers hang overhead while enormous arched windows brighten every inch of the room. Long wooden benches—almost pew-like in appearance—invite travelers to pause before the next train arrives. The entire space feels bright, airy, timeless, and monochromatic in the best possible way. Everywhere you turn there's another architectural detail begging to be photographed.
Originally opened in 1914, the station was built as part of New York Central Railroad's expansion and remains one of Upstate New York's architectural gems today. Even better—it isn't just beautiful, but it's still very much alive. Amtrak trains continue serving the station today, while the Adirondack Railroad also operates scenic excursions departing right from the historic terminal. One of my favorite moments from the evening happened while we were photographing near the giant windows overlooking the tracks, when every so often, we’d hear a ‘whoooooosh!’ A train would come barreling onto the tracks behind us, and instead of treating it like an interruption, Haley, Noah, and I embraced into it. They leaned into the flurry of excitement of the passing train, while I channeled my creative energy into one of my favorite signature additions to engagement sessions—the inclusion of GIFs!
Downtown Utica could not have been more perfect for it either. Watching the train glide across the windows behind the couple added movement that can't be as effectively captured in a still photograph. It almost feels like you're standing there with them, hearing the rumble of the tracks and feeling the station come alive.
I'm also a sucker for incorporating shutter drags whenever the opportunity presents itself. Those dreamy streaks of motion, glowing lights, and passing trains create images that feel cinematic rather than documentary alone. Instead of freezing a moment, they preserve the energy of it.
The station also had a beautifully preserved black steam locomotive displayed outside—a taste of the downtown charm of the neighborhood, and of an era when train travel carried an unmistakable sense of romance. There was something nostalgic about photographing them in such a architectural setting—a piece of history that has witnessed generations of travelers beginning new adventures of their own.

Wandering through the charm of downtown Utica
After we'd soaked up every inch of the station’s marble, skylights, arches, and train platforms (and after we all collectively agreed that it was approximately one million degrees inside, because we were truly melting 😂), we wandered outside. And that's where downtown Utica really began popping off. 🙌🏼
Gone were the soaring marble columns. Instead, we found ourselves surrounded by warm burnished brick buildings, leafy green trees, vintage advertisements painted across century-old storefronts, Narnia-esque street lamps, and one vibrant restaurant after another. Downtown felt revitalized without losing any history—like a perfect blend of old and new, which was so easy to photograph.

Haley and Noah's first outfits fit the evening perfectly. Haley wore the sweetest white midi dress that immediately made me think of a summer garden party. Light, effortless, and feminine, it floated beautifully every time she twirled or walked. Noah complemented her in neutral khaki trousers, rich brown leather loafers, and a soft taupe knit polo that kept everything feeling elevated without looking overly formal. Together, their color palette felt calm and understated—which was exactly what these historic backdrops needed. 👏🏼
And then there was the ring. Worth. Every. Extra. Month. Of. Waiting.
Noah's custom-designed engagement ring centered around a stunning elongated oval diamond surrounded by a delicate hidden halo, all resting atop a slim pavé diamond band. It sparkled from literally every angle, catching the soft evening light as Haley reached for Noah's hand, brushed his shoulder, or laughed mid-conversation. Classic enough to still look beautiful fifty years from now, yet uniquely hers in all the best ways.
Vintage marquee magic at the Stanley Theatre
Changing into their second outfits gave the session a completely different feel in the best way possible. Gone were the dress-and-loafers "summer date night" vibes, replaced with effortless weekend casual. Haley swapped into relaxed, light-wash cuffed jeans and a crisp white tee, while Noah changed into dark denim and a textured navy shirt. And can we please take a moment for their matching white New Balance sneakers? Because I don't know who coordinated that, but I’m obsessed. ✨👟
Their outfit change was also the perfect pivot to our second destination—the iconic Stanley Theatre. If Union Station felt timeless and elegant, the Stanley brought all the vintage romance, old-Hollywood charm, and main character movie energy I could've hoped for. I mean... if you're going to run across a street holding hands, spin beneath glowing marquee lights, and steal kisses in the middle of downtown, this is the spot. 😏
The moment the marquee came into view, it was a full-send for me. Its enormous vintage overhang stretched proudly across Genesee Street, which was framed by rows upon rows of glowing incandescent bulbs. Above the marquee were intricate carvings, ornate moldings, and beautiful floral-inspired murals that filled the upper façade with color and rich texture. The entire building felt like someone combined Art Deco with a European opera house—and then sprinkled in just a touch of small-town charm. Originally opening its doors in 1928, the Stanley Theatre has hosted everything from Broadway productions to concerts, comedians, and classic films over nearly a century. Today, thanks to extensive restoration efforts, it's one of the cultural hearts of downtown and remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Mohawk Valley. Photographically speaking, it honestly doesn't get much better than the Stanley Theatre. The oversized marquee created gorgeous leading lines while the hundreds of warm bulbs added instant atmosphere. Whether we were photographing wide architectural scenes that showcased the entire building or tucking Haley and Noah underneath the glowing lights for something more intimate, every angle made my heart skip a beat!
The secret to natural, authentic, joy-filled engagement photos
Some of my favorite images from this portion of the evening weren't even the perfectly posed ones. They were the in-between moments where Noah and Haley ran across the street, melted into big bear hugs, and shared playful Eskimo kisses; they were moments where Haley would burst into laughter because Noah whispered something ridiculous. And honestly, those type of candids are almost always the photos that end up feeling the most personality-driven.
One thing I tell every couple before an engagement session is that you do not have to know how to pose. In fact… I'd almost rather you didn't. 🫢🤪 Because my sessions are intentionally built around movement and silliness! I'll probably ask you to walk, move, dance in the middle of the street, whisper something embarrassing, booty bump, the whole nine…
Because the goal isn't creating precise angles or perfect poses. It's about creating space for fun, laid back memories and interactions, rather than worrying about the camera. That's exactly how Haley and Noah’s session felt. They flirted. They teased. They laughed. They walked hand-in-hand through downtown like they would on any normal date night. And somewhere in the middle of all that, we were able to make some crazy gorgeous magic happen. 🥹📸
Another thing I especially loved about photographing this engagement session was how at-home I felt while leaning into landscape-forward imagery. I almost always gravitate toward scenery-heavy images because I don't just want couples to remember what they looked like—I also want them to remember what it felt like to be there, in the midst of their photoshoot.
Sometimes that means intentionally making my subjects small within a grand scene (like in front of the Stanley Theatre) so the architecture can speak around them. Other times it means photographing through the foreground, sharpening the background—like the warmth of the Marquee’s bulbs. Rather than distracting from the couple, these little perspective changes actually help recreate the experience of standing there, being present and fully immersed!
Downtown Utica practically begged for that approach. Between the massive scale of Union Station, the glowing Stanley marquee, charming brick alleyways, historic storefronts, and tree-lined sidewalks, the city basically became a character in Haley and Noah’s gallery. That is one of my favorite aspects of storytelling—approaching each engagement session from a unique, never-been-told story and creating true, one-of-a-kind art. ✨

Don’t be afraid of a little heat!
First (and perhaps most importantly) embrace the weather. Summer evenings are absolutely gorgeous, but they're also... well... hot. Lightweight fabrics, breathable outfits, comfortable shoes between locations, and plenty of water go a long way toward making the experience fun and enjoyable. Don't be afraid to sneak back to your car for a blast of air conditioning every now and then. Trust me—it can make a big difference!
Consider an outfit change
I'm a huge fan of bringing two outfits, just like Haley and Noah did. Their first look felt elevated and romantic, perfect for showcasing the grandeur of Union Station's marble architecture. Whereas their second felt relaxed, playful, and a bit more "them," complementing downtown's casual streets and the Stanley Theatre. Having both outfits gave their gallery variety, but still cohesive!
Dress so you can move easily
Most importantly? Dress comfortably! Yes, I want you to look amazing. But I also want you to feel yourself enough to run, twirl, sit on sidewalks, lean against brick walls, climb onto benches (when appropriate 😂), and actually enjoy yourself. If you're spending the entire session worried about wrinkling your outfit or keeping your shoes spotless, you're probably not having nearly as much fun as you should be!
And that's really what I hope couples remember long after the gallery is delivered. Not merely how pretty the locations were, or how iconic the ring was. Not the grandeur of the historic train station or the gorgeous marquee. But how much fun they had together. And most of all, that they are celebrating their upcoming marriage!
